Why having fresh, up to date content on your website, is vital for SEO

Do you want to keep visitors coming back to your site?

Is your content valuable, and does it add value to your business?

Is your content worthy of sharing?

When was the last time you updated your website content?

These are important questions to ask yourself. The answer is to Keep it fresh. Keep it informative. Make it valuable.

Stale, redundant, outdated content is so last century. Not only that, it can show all sorts of red flags to Google. Having a website with informative, up-to-date content is an absolute must! No one wants to land on a website and see a blog post from 1999; they want to see that your business has its finger on the pulse.

Visitors to your website are important, and so is Google. When Google sends out its spiders (not real ones, just ones that crawl your website and index your website’s pages), they have a number of jobs, but the primary purpose is to index websites content, so it appears in its search engine results.

So having an SEO plan in place is vital. As an experienced SEO agency, we can help formulate your SEO strategy. But let’s run through a few things 1st:

What do Google spiders do?

Google spiders (aka search engine bots) land on your site, start gathering all sorts of data on your website, and work out if they should index your website in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).

They look at your links, your images and your content. If they come across duplicate, old, out of date content, it will simply affect the way the search engines rank you.

Fresh copy is soooo GGOOODDD!!!

Freshness can help to lead new visitors to your website. Fresh content that gets frequently updated gets crawled more often by search engine bots. Adding fresh content puts you at the top of a very big pile of results, so your site is less likely to get buried by search results.

Make sure you’ve got a compelling headline that grabs your visitors’ attention, making them want to click through. Also, make your content clear and easy to read. Don’t be too technical – there’s a fine line between confusing or baffling people. If they find it difficult to read, they will click away from your page.

Don’t let old content get stale.

Why not bring previously used content up to date? A minor tweak here, a new hyperlink there, and a fresh image will make all the difference. We’re not saying just tweak three or so words; it needs to be different. You could add a recent stat, a link to a blog post relating to the topic, or a link to a professional organisation.

When you tell Google your content is new via Google Search Console (GSC), you should see a spike in traffic, so a bit of tweak here goes a long way.

A little tip – Look at your Google Analytics and see what Blog posts have performed well in the past and re-purpose it.

What keywords are bringing visitors to my website?

Are your keywords still relevant? Google’s Search Console, AKA Google Webmaster Tools, is a super helpful tool that enables you to see how your website is performing. You can see how Google is indexing your website and identify what can be done to improve its performance. The more content you add, change, and improve, the more visitors you receive.

Are you adding relevant keywords to your website in your content? If your website content doesn’t contain relevant keywords your site visitors are using, you need to add these along with long-tail keywords to some of your posts. You can also use those keywords found in GSC as a list of potential topics for new content or even create some FAQs.

Trustworthy, genuine & fresh content is vital for any website. Still, there are also so many other factors you need to take into account to ensure your website is ranking in the Search Engine Results pages, such as fast-loading pages, responsive mobile-friendly design, minify code etc……
